Field Music has consistently been in my rotation since I stumbled on them around 2020. If you like bands like Yes, Supertramp, XTC, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, Prince, Sparks and The Beatles, then you are in for a real treat. And yes, I realize those are all wildly different bands. While you can definitely hear the influences, I find myself hearing bits and pieces that are somehow nostalgic, never do they sound plagiaristic. And they are definitely worthy of being in the same conversation as the bands I mentioned above.

Every one of their albums is a gem but I will highlight a few below. As far as genres go, I would call them prog-fusion but not in the jazz sense.

Field Music - Making a New World (2020)
Top Tracks – Coffee or Wine, Between Nations, Only in a Man’s World
My take – My personal favorite, a concept album with 19 (mostly short) tracks tracing how WWI shaped the future of civilization. If I didn’t know better, I would think Only in a Man’s World was a long last demo by Talking Heads and Prince.

Field Music - Flat White Moon (2021)
Top Tracks – Orion From the Street, No Pressure, The Curtained Room
My take – Maybe their most accessible record, 70s-tinged pop that recalls 10cc, McCartney, and Peter Gabriel-era Genesis.

Field Music - Open Here (2018)
Top Tracks – Time in Joy, Open Here, Find a Way to Keep Me
My take – Think The Beatles, Sparks, XTC and Talking Heads with a full orchestra crashing the party — strings, horns, flutes, the lot.

Field Music - Limits of Language (2024)
Top Tracks – Turn the Hours Away, On the Other Side, I Might Have Been Wrong
My take – This one is more synth forward and has a definite XTC undercurrent along with early Genesis, angular Talking Heads and even moments of Devo, Kraftwerk, Bowie and Phil Collins. These moments are exactly that, nostalgic call backs that don’t overwhelm or take over.

Field Music & The NASUWT Riverside Band - Binding Time (2024)
Top Tracks – Busy at His Play, Londonderry, Landless Forever
My take – Written entirely for a 7-piece brass band, utterly unlike anything else in their catalogue and completely beautiful.

In an effort to keep this going, I’m going to focus on creating a new issue when I find an artist or album that truly captures my interest instead of searching through the new albums each week just to find content. My take – London trio PVA have made a record that lives in the body as much as the ears. It's Massive Attack meets Portishead in a dark industrial warehouse. Ella Harris's vocals are somewhere between a whisper and a command throughout, and the whole thing pulses with a kind of sensual tension that doesn't let go.

New Album

Puscifer - Normal Isn’t
Top Tracks – Bad Wolf, The Quiet Parts, Pendulum
Genre – Post-Punk, Darkwave, Industrial, Electronic
My take – Maynard's weirdest and hardest to classify is always entertaining. Normal Isn't is a protest album wrapped in gothic synths and dark humour — Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails arguing in a room while Carina Round wanders in and steals the whole show.

Demob Happy - The Grown-Ups Are Talking
Top Tracks – Power Games, Who Should I Say Is Calling?
Genre – Psychedelic Rock, Desert Rock, Hard Rock
My take – Recorded in the desert in Joshua Tree, this album hits hard with the same riff-heavy swagger as Queens of the Stone Age and the similarities don’t stop there. Power Games is the kind of track that makes you wonder why you haven't been paying closer attention to this band. Good stuff.

GUM - Blue Gum Way
Top Tracks – Expanding Blue, Man Ray Bay, It Happens Almost Every Day, New Equator
Genre – Psychedelic Pop, Neo-Psych
My take – Jay Watson — best known as the multi-instrumentalist (the gum) holding things together in Tame Impala and Pond — has made killer solo record under his GUM alias. It's warm, melancholic, has some twists and turns, and is the kind of record that reveals more with each listen.

My take – It’s gritty, bluesy, heavy and relentless. These guys have been doing it a while but still sound like a garage band you’re lucky enough to stumble upon. Big hooks, bigger moods, and a decent production.

Fave Album

A Certain Ratio – Mind Made Up
Top Tracks – Down, Down, Down, Way to Escape, Starlight
Genre – Post-Punk, Funk
My take – An album that combines two of my favorite things… 80s post-punk and 70s funk. Mind Made Up is all bass, tight percussion, and grooves that feel like early Talking Heads combined with LCD Soundsystem.

Fave Album

Marian Hill – Unusual
Top Tracks – Subtle Thing, All Night Long, Don’t Do It
Genre – Electronic R&B
My take – Marian Hill weaponize negative space better than almost anyone. Unusual is all close-up mic, minimalist beats, hypnotic bass-lines and immaculate production. I don’t know that I’ve heard an album that does more with less. It’s seductive, creative, and strangely addictive — like Sylvan Esso gone dark.

Yussef Dayes – Black Classical Music
Top Tracks – Rust, The Light, Jukebox, Tioga Pass,
Genre – Jazz Fusion
My take – Jazz drummer, Yussef Dayes first studio album with a huge cast of other musicians. The album wraps spans genres like jazz, R&B, funk and pop. I don’t find myself listening to a lot of jazz but this one gets occasional play.

Fave Album

Zoë Keating – Into the Trees
Top Tracks – Escape Artist, The Path, Lost
Genre – Modern Classical, Ambient Cello
My take – A breathtaking album built from layered cello loops, but never feeling like a technical exercise. Keating creates songs that evolve slowly and beautifully. Quite cinematic and emotional, I can’t help but envision a foggy field leading into a dark forest.

Esthesis – Out of Step

My take – If The Pineapple Thief, Tool, Riverside, and Leprous had a quiet-night collaboration, it might sound like this. A confident, cohesive slow-burn listen. I liked their first album, missed their second and caught this last one, and I’m so glad I did. I listened to their second album, Watching Worlds Collie, for the first time and that one is an absolute gem too, adding some jazz feel, which I love.

Blakroc – Blakroc
Top Tracks – On the Vista, Ain’t Nothing Like You, What You Do To Me
Genre – Hip-Hop, Rap, Blues Rock
My take – One of the coolest crossover albums ever made. The Black Keys’ crunchy blues riffs meet verses from Mos Def, RZA, Q-Tip, and more. It’s gritty, loose, analog, and full of swagger. It reminds me a bit of Cypress Hill’s Skull & Bones double album, one rap, one rock.

Fave Album

Private World – Aleph
Top Tracks – Hypnagogia, Magic Lens, Spine
Genre – Sophisti-Pop, New Wave
My take – Impossibly smooth. Aleph lives in that late-80s world where lush pads, soft bass lines, and airy vocals form a kind of elegant, minimalist pop architecture. This isn’t just inspired by 80’s synth-pop, it is 100% 80’s through and through and will take you right back. Think Roxy Music (Avalon, particularly), Talk Talk and a touch of Spandeau Ballet. This is prom music, especially the slow dances.

Jane Weaver – Love In Constant Spectacle
Top Tracks – Love in Constant Spectacle, Is Metal,
Genre – Psych Pop, Dream Pop
My take – Jane Weaver has quietly become a master of swirling, hypnotic pop, and this is one of her most approachable records. Guitars shimmer, synths pulse, and her vocals float just above the haze. It’s cosmic without being distant, dreamy without losing its groove. Fans of Cate Le Bon, Broadcast, or Jane Weaver’s own Modern Kosmology era will feel right at home.

My take – Sorry continue their slinky descent into paranoia and playfulness. “Cosplay” swaps guitars for glitched synths and half-whispered hooks, landing somewhere between Dry Cleaning’s detached narration and Gorillaz’s sideways funk. It’s still messy, but beautifully so — like a fever dream of London nightlife.

Insecure Men – A Man For All Seasons
Top Tracks – Krab, Butter
Genre – Lounge Pop, Psychedelic Pop
My take – The most bizarrely charming record you’ll hear this month. This warped easy-listening revival comes with cinematic strings, woozy melodies, and a sly, ironic delivery. Imagine Baxter Dury and The Avalanches jamming together in a smoky lounge somewhere.

She’s In Parties – Are You Dreaming?
Top Tracks – Are You Dreaming?, Runaway, R.E.M.
Genre – Dream Pop, Shoegaze
My take – An elegant debut EP that wears its ‘90s roots proudly — Cocteau Twins reimagined through bedroom pop sensibilities. Reverb-drenched vocals float over bright guitars that blur at the edges. It’s wistful but confident, romantic without irony. A dream that feels like it might last.

Midlake – A Bridge To Far
Top Tracks – The Ghouls, Eyes Full of Animal, The Calling
Genre – Folk Rock, Chamber Pop
My take – Midlake return in full cinematic form — pianos, flutes, harmonies, the works. It’s music for orange sunsets and long roads home — tender, timeless, and quietly grand.

Allie X – Happiness Is Going To Get You
Top Tracks – Is Anybody Out There?, 7th Floor, Down Season, It’s Just Light
Genre – Synth Pop, Art Pop
My take – Canadian Allie X pushes her pop craft into something stranger and darker here. The hooks hit and the edges are sharp — think St. Vincent meets Tori Amos with an occasional splash of Dresden Dolls.

White Lies – Night Light
Top Tracks – Keep Up, Everything Is Ok, I Just Wanna Win One Time
Genre – Indie Rock, Synth Rock
My take – This one is darkly melodic and widescreen, balancing melancholy with motion. It is a modern take on everything from 80’s Americana and Synth Pop to 2000’s Dance. It might just be me but I hear influences from The Cars, Bruce Springsteen, The Police, U2 and Wild Beasts.

My take – Dog Race take the familiar grey of modern post-punk and inject a heartbeat. It’s sharp, hypnotic, and full of restraint, which works well with its energy.

Genre – Indie Dance, Art-Pop
My take – Humdrum is an album that is anything but. Wiry funk, twitchy synths, and sardonic lyrics about work, tech, and modern absurdity. Every track jitters with nervous energy. It’s catchy and made for the dance floor.

Adult Cinema – This Is Your Life
Top Tracks – Coming From The Left, Supercool, Broken Bones
Genre – Soft Prog
My take – Warm, analog, and beautifully unhurried. This Is Your Life feels like rediscovering a forgotten Pink Floyd reel — layered harmonies, gliding guitars, and gentle reflection instead of bombast. It’s timeless, heartfelt, and quietly devastating in all the right ways.

My take – Big catharsis energy. Think Interpol meets Wolf Alice with some grit from early Metric and throw in a splash of Smashing Pumpkins. Guitars stab and shimmer, vocals crack open, and the whole thing moves with the urgency of someone sprinting through downtown L.A. at 2 a.m.

Joseph of Mercury – WAVE II

My take – Sleek, romantic, and just a touch tragic. Joseph of Mercury layers his throwback voice over synths that shimmer like streetlights in rain. Gorgeous melancholy crooning for late-night romantics.

My take – Night Tapes nail the balance between bedroom pop and interstellar drift. Flitting vocals float above beats that flow between yacht rock and trip-hop. If you’ve ever wanted Beach House and Toro y Moi to jam together, this scratches it.

My take – Acoustic guitars intertwine with throbbing deep-house rhythms, pulling folk storytelling onto the dance floor. If you like Kerala Dust, you will dig this guy.

Amanda Shires – Nobody’s Girl
Top Tracks – A Way It Goes, Piece Of Mind
Genre – Americana, Alt-Country
My take – Fierce and intimate, Shires blends fiddle fire with songwriter grit. This is a beautiful, heartfelt, confessional breakup record and she powers through like a phoenix from the flame.

Sprints – All That Is Over
Top Tracks – Abandon, Something’s Gonna Happen, Better, Desire
Genre – Punk Rock, Post-Punk
My take – Sprints channel pure catharsis: jagged guitars, shout-to-the-rafters vocals, and pounding rhythm that refuses to quit. Like early Savages colliding with the spirit of Bauhaus — dark, raw, urgent.

My take – Lola delivers biting, brutally honest songs with pop sheen and soul undercurrents. A little Lily Allen, a little Olivia Rodrigo, but sharper, darker, and unapologetically self-aware. These are breakup anthems with teeth.

Yukon Blonde – Friendship & Rock ’n’ Roll
Top Tracks – One Of These Days, That Girl
Genre – Indie Rock, Canadiana
My take – A bright, harmony-driven record that lands somewhere between The Shins and Tame Impala. Yukon Blonde lean into groove and camaraderie—jangly guitars, layered vocals, and choruses built for summer nights.

Stoned Jesus –
Top Tracks – New Dawn, Low, See You On The Road
Genre – Stoner Rock, Doom, Psychedelic Rock
My take – Big riffs baked in desert heat. Stoned Jesus stretch out into 90’s style fuzzed-out jams that feel equal parts Sabbath and Kyuss, with a little modern psych shimmer in the mix. Heavy enough to rattle your speakers, hypnotic enough to lose yourself in. Perfect soundtrack for a long drive under a blazing sun.

My take – Baxter’s signature lyrical narration continues: half confession, half piss-take, all charisma. Groovy bass lines, droning beats, strings, and sly delivery.

Leisure - Welcome to the Mood
Top Tracks – Welcome to the Mood, The Colour of the Sound
Genre – Chillwave, Soul Pop
My take – Leisure are the kings of slow-burn bliss. It’s polished enough for a rooftop bar playlist but warm enough to soundtrack your late-night wind-downs. Like Tame Impala’s mellower cousin who discovered R&B.

New Album

Die Spitz - Something to Consume
Top Tracks – Throw Yourself to the Sword, Sound to No One, Down on It
Genre – Punk Rock, Metal
My take – Unhinged, snarling punk that doesn’t ask for permission. Die Spitz debut album sounds like Bikini Kill and Amyl & the Sniffers scrapping in a basement about which Nirvana song rocks hardest. It’s abrasive, cathartic, and just the right amount of unpolished.

My take – Brit post-punk in its most serrated form. Raw, snarling guitars with a wiry edge, lyrics spat more than sung. Imagine IDLES on a leaner, more jagged diet, or Gang of Four shot through with caffeine and dread.

Ghostwoman – Welcome to the Civilized World
Top Tracks – When You All Were Young, From Now On, Anhedonia
Genre – Psychedelic Blues
My take – Alberta’s Ghostwoman drifts in the shadows of The Black Angels, early BRMC, and even a bit of Spacemen 3. Dark reverb, minimal lo-fi songs that feel like they’re playing in a dusty bar at 3am.

Suede - Antidepressants
Top Tracks – Antidepressants, The Sound And The Summer, Criminal Ways, Life Is Endless, Life Is A Moment
Genre – Britpop, Post-Punk
My take – Brett Anderson still croons with world-weary elegance, and Suede sound surprisingly vital. It’s got that glam shimmer they’ve always carried, but here it leans bittersweet distortion, like The Alarm or The Cure at times .

My take – On this second solo outing, Jehnny Beth carries forward the sound I fell in love with when she was fronting Savages and has added some new elements. Think Siouxsie Sioux mixed with Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails. This one comes at you right from the start and does not let up.

Ganser – Animal Hospital
Top Tracks – Dig Until I Reach the Moon, Lounger,
Genre – Post‑Punk, Indie Rock
My take – Chicago’s Ganser with their third-full length comes out swinging with Black Sand but then Stripe softens the tension with a pulsing bass and ambient haze. The album continues to swing back and forth like this, highlighting different energies throughout. Dig Until I Reach The Moon feels like a lost Radiohead track, as an example.

Liima – 1982
Top Tracks – 1982, Life is Dangerous, My Mind Is Yours
Genre – Synthwave, Dream Pop, Electronica
My take – Liima is a side project for Finnish alt/indie group Efterklang adding Finnish jazz drummer Tatu Ronkko. This is their second LP and the more polished of the two, which is no slight to the first. Dark and moody, it is definitely reminiscent of 80’s synth-pop with an interesting rhythm section that is worth paying attention to.

Mammút - Ride the Fire
Top Tracks – Solomon, Pow Pow, Forever on Your Mind, Still Like a Mountain
Genre – Alt‑Rock, Post‑Rock, Indie
My take – This one ebbs and flows like the tide with waves crashing down on a cold, rocky Icelandic beach. There is a weight and heft to this album, blending throbbing beats, synths and guitars in unique ways. It’s as if Bat for Lashes recruited Björk to make an exceptional album with PJ Harvey dropping in to produce a track or two. I had trouble narrowing down the number of tracks to highlight, which is always a good sign. If you like this one, there is a back catalog to go through too.

That’s the run for this week: cabaret’s confrontation, post-punk’s tension, synth-washed reverie, and untamed indie epic. Four portals, one issue.

My take – A sonic step forward. Less glam, more depth. Big emotional swings, slow builds, and bursts of distortion. A genre-bending pop/rock album with some weight and depth behind it.

Album – An Echo Of Love
Artist – Kerala Dust
Top Tracks – Echoes of Grace, Bell, Eden to Eden
Genre – Electronic
My take – Moody, hypnotic grooves built for late nights and neon reflections. This one simmers—layered synths, whispered vocals, and heavy beats that feel like dust swirling in headlights on a southern highway. Fans will instantly recognize their sound and appreciate a bit of evolution. If you’re new to them, think Shriekback working with a ZZ Top producer to create an album for the dance floor.

My take – This one's abstract but emotionally grounded—think Cate Le Bon meets Bjork with a dose of dreamlike unease. It's music for when you’re in your head but looking for something new to latch onto. Some of the tracks can feel a bit sparse and cold, definitely not background music—this one rewards attention.

My take – Black Honey keep leveling up. Soak leans into pop with a Brit-rock backbone—a breathy, pop vocal combined with a heavy indie-rock hook. It's catchy harkening back to 90s No Doubt at times, but there’s still some grit under the gloss.

Genre – Electro-Pop, Industrial Hip-Hop, Alt-R&B
My take – Noga Erez turns up the voltage. This one’s feral, political and clubby. Glitchy beats, heavy bass, and vocals that jump from whispers to war cries. Chaotic in the best way as if Cypress Hill gave birth to Billie Eilish in a Tel Aviv warehouse. I imagine that South Beach is rocking out to this one right now.

Top Tracks – The Knife, Now Here - No Where, My Ten, The King
Genre – Heavy Rock, Sludge Blues, Psychedelic Metal
My take – This is cathartic, heavy, and soulful all at once. Mlny Parsonz has one of the best voices in rock—raspy, raw, and full of ache. The riffs hit hard, but it’s the emotion that lingers. A mountain worth climbing.

My take – Smooth, sepia-toned synth-Americana that sounds like a male version of Stevie Nicks behind the mic. Feels like driving through the Midwest sunset with friends in 1986 with the windows down.

My take – More of that 80’s nostalgic vibe on this one but heavier on the synths with gliding basslines, hushed vocals, and grooves that feel like they’re suspended in the warm summer air.

My take – Wet Leg are still cheeky, weird, and catchy. This follow-up doesn’t stray far from their debut’s DNA, but the songs feel a bit darker and more confident. Perceived influences like Missing Persons, Talking Heads and No Doubt combine to make something new and moist.

My take – Honest, thoughtful songwriting with a laid-back indie shimmer. If you dig Julia Jacklin or Sharon Van Etten, this one will stick. It has a clean, glossy sound doesn’t sit in the same place for too long.

My take – Sharp angles and deadpan delivery. It’s jittery, mechanical, and addictive—like Gang of Four crossed with early Nine Inch Nails or Depeche Mode. Social commentary wrapped in icy synths and wiry guitars. A bit darker and less dance oriented than their debut, this is a good sophomore effort.

My take – Heavy Pink Floyd influence here (Final Stand sounds like it could have been on The Wall), along with vocals that remind me of Black Hearts Procession. This is an atmospheric, psychedelic rock album that sets an inviting, inoffensive mood.

My take – If you’ve been craving a modern Steely Dan without the snark overdose, Monkey House might be your prescription. Smooth grooves and impeccable horn sections make for a slick sound that will take you right back to the seventies.

Top Tracks – Leonard Street, Recognise
Genre – Synth-Pop
My take – If Kate Bush and Imogen Heap got stuck in a studio with nothing but vintage synths and Peter Gabriel’s immaculate production. Recognise is a standout track that could have been included on Peter Gabriel So as a companion track to Don’t Give Up.

My take – Skunk Anansie hasn’t lost a thing in the 9-years since their last album except for their nu-metal sound. This album is much more experimental and diverse with Skin’s voice anchoring their sound across a few different genres.

My take – Another band that has shed their previous sound, this time losing their stoner rock/doom metal sound in favour of, dare I write it, psych-pop? Long time fans may not appreciate this new direction but it is definitely a more accessible album for them and it is getting a lot of playtime from me right now.

Top Tracks – Living A Lie, Joe Bought A Gun, Go All The Way
Genre - Alternative/Indie
My take – A bit of arena rock from this band, you can definitely see that they are writing music for larger audiences and venues. They seem to channel Muse, Royal Blood and Nothing But Thieves a bit at times but are definitely their own sound. This is pure, driving rock that doesn’t diverge too far from their alt-rock roots.

My take – Starting off the album with a piano intro that could be a lost Fiona Apple track, this is another genre hopping album with an underlying vibe of Stevie Nicks throughout her 70’s/80’s career.

Top Tracks – Body Slam, Fare Evader
Genre - Alternative/Indie, Rock
My take – This is cinematic funk for fans of moody vibes and vintage textures. Like the soundtrack to a ‘70s detective show with cameos from Ponch and Jon. Everything’s locked-in, tight, and smooth as a suede couch.
